Supporting our Skin's Barrier this Summer
by Body+Beauty Lab Medical Injector Vanessa Stripling, APRN

As we welcome the warmer summer months in South Florida, we often put caring for our skin on the back burner.  We trade the bustling days of spring for a more relaxed pace.  We swap our ablative lasers and resurfacing chemical peels for multiple applications of Elta MD sunscreen  and floppy straw hats.  This time of year, I like to focus on protecting the skin’s barrier from the harsh summer sun.

We can protect our skin’s barrier from environmental aggressors like the sun several ways. First, we should pursue gentle and hydrating treatments.  Our aloe vera rich vital cream cleanser soothes skin while washing away impurities.   Our HydraFacial  extracts remnants of sunscreen, sand and salt and infuses skin with antioxidants to fight skin aging free radicles.  We quench parched skin with our Enriched Nourishing cream  that contains the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial phytochemical Kigela Africana fruit extract.

We should also protect our skin from the inside out by staying hydrated.  Consider putting a pinch of mineral rich Himalayan Sea salt to one of your 8 glasses of water to balance your electrolytes and hydrate on a cellular level.

Lastly, plan to do Botox and dermal fillers during the week and stay out of direct sunlight after aesthetic treatments.  While some opt to disregard these instructions, know that it is vital to keep blood vessels from dilating and possibly moving the product to an adjacent muscle or tissue that is deliberately not targeted during treatment.  We also want to regard this freshly injected skin and tissue as sensitive and therefore more prone to injury or inflammation. Staying out of the sun in the days following will allow for better healing which is what is needed for the best aesthetic outcome.

Keep these things in mind and you will return from summer break with a slightly sun kissed, hydrated glow. But, if you choose to go rouge and disregard every suggestion we will be here this fall with our Intense pulsed light and Moxi lasers ready to treat the dots and spots you acquired cruising to St. Kitts.
